Showing of the climate change film "The 11TH Hour" at 7pm at MEF
A newly formed organization of Northampton residents called GREEN Northampton will be hosting a screening of The 11th Hour, the documentary on climate change produced by Leonardo DiCaprio. The event will be held on Friday, July 11th at 7:00 PM at the Media Education Foundation (60 Masonic Street, Northampton, located in the same building as the Woodstar Cafe).
The event is co-sponsored by the Northampton Committee to Stop the War in Iraq. "The urgency of climate change and peak oil will require a new way of living that requires us to work together as neighbors and as a community. That's the thought behind GREEN Northampton, building community while trying to aim for a carbon-free lifestyle. This film will be a great opportunity to bring together the efforts of two different, but related causes," says organizer Kathy Bonnet, a Northampton resident who has worked on many climate change and peak resource related initiatives. GREEN Northampton (Growing Resiliency in Energy and Environment in Neighborhoods in Northampton) is a new group of activists whose mission is fostering collective neighborhood actions that respond to climate change and resource depletion, leading to sustainable and resilient ways of living. The organization is planning a carbon rally for all of Northampton that will launch in September to educate Northamptonites about ways to reduce their carbon footprint on the march to a zero carbon Northampton. GREEN Northampton is a volunteer organization whose organizers include Kathy Bonnet, Psy.D., Northampton resident, Doctor in Psychology, Activist, Alex Risley Schroeder, a green jobs consultant, David Starr, an organizer of the local Earth Hour ‘08 effort and co-founder of Green Action in Northampton, Ruth von Goeler, an organizer of the local Step It Up events, and Chris Mason, Energy Officer for the City of Northampton. Peggy MacLeod, Marketing Director of Green Building Programs, and Tomasin Whitaker, Outreach Coordinator, both of CET, are also members.
The film will be followed by a discussion and an introduction to GREEN Northampton. This event is co-sponsored by the Center for Ecological Technology (CET SM), a non-profit energy and resource conservation organization that has served western Massachusetts since 1976. CET helps residents, businesses and towns reduce their carbon footprint through increased access to renewable energy options and energy efficiency measures.
